Reading Selection Differentiation Ideas

Content
(what we teach)
· Use different resources to address the same concept (i.e. when studying a theme, use novel, short story, poetry, current events, magazine articles, internet resource, etc. with that theme-different levels of readers will be addressed while meeting the same purpose)
· Use the expertise of the literacy specialist at your school to determine students’ reading levels (SRI lexile score) and text readability. Use the expertise of the media specialist to help you locate materials.

Process (activity to make sense of the material)
· Activate prior knowledge with anecdote, video clip, real world example
· Preview text-skim, view pictures, note bold words
· Review vocabulary before reading
· Allow note taking with post-its when reading to encourage interaction with text

Product (helps students rethink, use and extend what they learn)
· The possibilities are endless… (i.e. design a game, write a poem, present a news report, blog about reading, write a biography, make a video, draw a blue print, make a time line of events…)
